2010 and the ITM system

Through the Music Department a large number of Itinerant Music teachers are dedicated at providing music expertise in their chosen field to the pupils for the Katikati College. Lessons are provided by a combination of government funded free lessons and private providers.
For 2010 the free government sponsored lessons are on the following instruments “Guitar, Bass Guitar, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Tuba, Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass.” Your child can collect an application form from the student office if they are interested in learning one of these instruments. Currently we are running waiting lists for Guitar.
For 2010 the private providers are Singing (Cathy Harris), Guitar (Sean Bodley), Piano / Keyboard (Joyette Drost) and Drums (Kal Irwin). The drum lessons have had a large intake to a few number of lessons, so waiting lists are also in place for this instrument. If you are interested in learning from a private teacher, please contact the Music Department for details.
The school also has a number of instruments for hire at a cost of $45.00 for the year. Currently available for 2010 we currently have available Trombone, Clarinets, Trumpets, Violin and Viola. Or else you can hire an instrument from Bay City Music or the Rock Shop in Tauranga. Both companies have excellent hirage schemes and hire to buy schemes.
Music lessons occur during school time and are approximately 30 minutes in length. Due the revolving school timetable students will not miss the same class each week.
If you desire more information about the program and contact details of the teachers themselves please ask your child to collect a “Everything you need to know about learning a music instrument at Katikati College” brochure from the Student Office or email wfleming@katikaticollege.school.nz.

Singing and the Big Sing

This year we started with two choirs. One our normal all comers choir. The other we named “Natural Pacifika” and aimed at the Maori and Polynesian students.

A few weeks before the Big Sing due to lack of commitment we dissolved the all comers choir and joined all the remaining singers together under the name “Natural Pacifika”.

On the day they sang two songs – Stronger by Adeaze and I’m your Angel.

We learnt lots from the experience and are aiming to do a lot more acapella items in the future.

This choir is always looking for new committed members who are willing to try part singing in different styles. Please give your name to Mrs Fleming if interested. Practices are held every Wednesday after school till 4pm in the music room.

Chamber Competitions 2009

This year we took three groups to the Tauranga division of the National Chamber Competition.
It was held at Baycourt Theatre on the Friday the 19th of June, this competition is aimed at year 9 to 13 students playing in groups of three or more for a minimum of 3 minutes.
The first group to perform was “LC3”. A percussion group consisting of Catrin Wootton, Lachlan Fowler, Cameron Green and Caleb Miers-Jones all on different drums playing a piece called “Bucket Brigade”.
Our second lot of competitors were 2C +1B. This group consisted of Cameron Green on Guitar, Broghan Blackshaw on Bass and catrin Wootton on Flute. The piece they performed was called Scramble and was very special, as Catrin Wootton herself wrote it. She won a prize on the day for Composing Excellence.
Our final group was called “Fluno” and they performed a pieve called “Galway Pipers”. This piece was originally written fro three flutes and piano. We re-arranged it for two flutes (Catrin Wootton and Pip Grierson), one alto sax (Katrina Clarkson) and piano (Broghan Blackshaw).
All had a great day and our students returned enthused about what they could write and produce for next years competition.
