Spatial Variations of Tourism Development in the Cook Islands
Periphery vs Interior - Rarotonga
Now that you have spent some time looking for spatial variations using maps of Rarotonga, you need to record some of your findings.
Choose one of the following variations and write a comment to this post that describes the variation and explains why the variation exists. I have submitted a comment about a variation at Aitutaki as an example.
Hi guys, if you have arrived at this post, you are clearly an adventurous soul who seeks challenge and likes trying new ways of doing things. Well done!
Your task is similar to the one others are doing on paper, however, I would like you to answer this question using digital tools.
Some ideas:
There are several unusual terms/words used in the resource booklet for your current assessment. I have listed some important terms and their definitions below.
| TERM | DEFINITON |
| adverse coach consumers discretionary disposable domestic dynamic generating markets Intraregional long-haul looming model phenomena proliferated quantitative forecasts sectors socio-culturally trading down underlying structural trends |
difficult bus travellers spare money spare money within a country exciting, changeable countries that tourists come from within a region between regions, long distance slowly coming closer diagram things grew rapidly predictions about tourism numbers (in this case) types of transport to do with lifestyles, behaviours, traditions giving up long-term trend |
We have looked at the way attractions can be classified and described, and identified and mapped the major attractions in Rotorua.
Your task is to bring this information together to answer a L3 NCEA style question.
Anaylse the character and distribution of Rotorua’s tourist attractions.
To do this well you will need to:
1. explain the how Rotorua’s attractions can be divided into different categories
2. describe and explain the distribution (location) of attractions. ie are there any patterns, groupings or dispersal of different attractions.
Make sure you bring together the notes you took from the text about attractions, the named categories and examples from task 2, and the map from task 3.

Hi Guys, to further develop our understanding of how the elements of tourism development interact, I would like you to analyse the daily rags (newspapers).
Go to a reputable New Zealand news site (see the bottom of the post) and look for some articles that directly or indirectly relate to tourism in New Zealand.
Virtually all newspaper articles are based around an event. Think about the implications of this event on the Tourism Development Elements. Decide which element has been modified, and how this might change one or more of the other elements. Set out your thinking like this:
