TeamGeo - Coastal Landforms

10 05 2009

In class we have learnt about the development of the Waihi Beach Coastal Environment in general and covered the formation of the Bowentown tombolo spit. Your job now is to find out about the formation of some other coastal landforms present at Waihi Beach. Look for information on the following:

  • Sand dunes
  • Caves, Arches, Stacks and Stumps
  • Wave-cut platforms.

You will need to be able to describe these features and explain how processes have interacted to form them. You should summarise what you have found out, by creating THREE-STAGE diagrams in your notes showing the formation of each coastal landform.

TeamGeo - How waves work

21 02 2009

Some of you probably know a lot about waves already, others probably know just a little. On our fieldtrip, we will be collecting data on wave characteristics, so it is important to know what all these terms mean beforehand. I would like you to unleash the power of the internet and find out about how waves work. You should develop an answer in a word document, and then when you are happy with it you should submit it as a comment to this post.Your paragraph must include the following terms (in capitals):

  • wave length
  • height
  • circular
  • friction
  • frequency
  • beach profile
  • kinetic
  • fetch
  • energy
  • swash
  • backwash
  • break
  • wave period

Spatial Variations of Tourism - Cook Islands

RarotongaNow that you have spent some time looking for spatial variations using maps of Rarotonga, you need to record some of your findings.

Choose one of the following variations and write a comment to this post that describes the variation and explains why the variation exists. I have submitted a comment about a variation at Aitutaki as an example.

  • Avarua vs Muri
  • Southern vs Rest of coast
  • Periphery vs Interior
  • Distribution of accommodation types

  • Tourism Development - Spatial Variations

    12 09 2008

Hi guys, if you have arrived at this post, you are clearly an adventurous soul who seeks challenge and likes trying new ways of doing things. Well done!

Your task is similar to the one others are doing on paper, however, I would like you to answer this question using digital tools.

    Some ideas:

    • Show the patterns in Google Earth using sets of icons. Add explanations of the patterns/processes directly into Google Earth.
    • As a voicethread
    • As a quick Google Docs Presentation
    • Use a graphics program for the mapping part, and a word processor for the written part
