March Monitoring Month

koura

Well done 9MKE and 9SEC. I posted off all your river monitoring work, (river assessment reports, artworks, haikus, invertebrate Powerpoints and games), to the Royal Society of New Zealand for the March Monitoring Month Competition. They were blown away with “the huge body of work the students have done” and “the very high standard”.

In their next newsletter (I will show you a copy) there will be a section on March Monitoring Month along with the results of the competition. The Royal Society would like to profile the work you have done, including a photo or two, and using Lucy, Melanie and Hayley’s artwork in another article for the newsletter.

Well done all of you! Clearly you have made a huge impression and I am proud of you. I wonder if you’ve won anything and what it might be. Will keep you posted. In the meantime would you please spread the news amongst yourselves and enjoy your well-earned holiday.

Some questions for Year 9 before next term…

electricity.jpg

Try to answer these. The best answers by the end of these holidays will earn you a canteen voucher.

1. What did Allesandro Volta invent?

2. With what discovery is Andre Marie Ampere generally credited?

3. In three sentences, how does a solar panel work?

4. What is the relationship between lightning and electricity?

5. What is the purpose of a fuse?

6. In theory, the sky should appear violet, not blue. Why is this?

Post your answers and enjoy your holiday…

Words and More Words

Well done Hayley - see me for a canteen voucher!

Joseph’s Television

The wrong amounts have been added up. The $2 the assistant has kept should be added to the $25 the shopkeeper has, giving a total of $27 - the amount Joseph paid for the television. Joseph has $3, which, added to the $27 makes the total up to $30; the original amount involved.

Indicator species? Seahorses are being found again in the Thames River

The Thames River into London was so filthy until some forty years ago that nothing could survive in it. With good management, it has become increasingly “clean”, and now, sea horses have been found in it. Check out this link to one of the main English newspapers, The Telegraph.

Marshmallow bunny competion winner

After careful analysis of the original bunny experiment site and analysis of originality of your answers, my choice is aiyanabanana. Could that be you, Lindsey? Please see me for your box of Favourites. I liked Lucy’s boiling experiment, but the website showed it to have been done before…

Penguins Can Fly - or Can They?…..

Check out this link. What do you think?

Words and more words - your responses

Keep your answers coming in, but to be fair to all I won’t publish these until the closing date.

Also, if you have more words to add, feel free to update your previous post. Let your younger brothers and sisters (Year 7-10) know about this, and give them a chance too!

Joseph’s Television

tv cartoon

Joseph bought a second hand TV for $30, but after he took it home the shopkeeper realised that he had charged too much - it should have been $25. Fortunately he knew Joseph’s address, so he sent his assistant to give the $5 back. However, the assistant wasn’t as honest as the shopkeeper and gave Joseph only $3, keeping $2 for himself. Joseph has now paid $27 for his television and the assistant has $2, making a total of $29. But Joseph paid $30 - what happened to the other $1?Â
