The half-full jar

Amoebas reproduce by splitting in two. An amoeba which does this once every minute is placed in a jar at exactly 10 o’clock in the morning. At 12 noon the jar is full. At exactly what time is the jar half full?

Farmer Brown’s horses

She borrowed a horse. the 18 horses were then divided as follows: the eldest daughter had 9 horses (half of 18), the second eldest had 6 (a third of 18) and the youngest had 2 (a ninth of 18). This left one horse over to return to Farmer Smith.

What colour was the bear?

There is only one place on Earth where you can travel 10 km south, then travel due east and still be only 10 km from your starting point…. The hunter’s camp is at the North Pole, so he must have shot a polar bear, which is white.

Coloured Hats

There are three men in a room: John, Charles and Richard, standing so that they can see each other. You have a bag containing five hats - three of them yellow and two blue. You ask the three men to close their eyes, then place a hat on each of their heads, fishing hats out of the bag at random. None of the men can see his own hat, nor what is left in the bag, but they do know what the bag originally contained. You ask each man in turn if he knows what colour his hat is. John and Charles both shake their heads, but Richard says, “I know what colour mine is, its ……” What colour is it and how does he know?
